Where is the citation sent? How long after the violation date is it sent?

The citation is mailed to the vehicle owner's address that is on file with the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) . By law, a red light citation must be mailed no later than the 14th day from the violation date. For a speed violation committed by a vehicle registered in MD, the citation must be mailed no later than the 14th day from the violation date and a citation for a vehicle registered out of state must be mailed no later than the 30th day from the violation date.


What are the fine amounts? Are there points assessed?

By law, the fine for an automated speed violation is $40 and the fine for an automated red light violation is $75. These citations are civil violations and carry no points.


How long do I have to pay the citation?

If payment is not received by the due date on the citation a notice will be sent to the registered owner that their tag will be flagged by the MVA if the citation is not paid within 30 days of the date of the notification. If payment is still not received within those 30 days, a third notice will be mailed stating that the tag has been flagged.
